Mr Roper’s Designer of the Week

In the last week of the Christmas term my designer of the week is Darren. Darren has really thought through aspects of his design work for his lamp and independently produced several drawings done on Illustrator to try and communicate his thinking. He is always focused and has demonstrated a real desire to progress his ideas well done Darren!!

Year 8 ICT Logo Work

The Year 8’s have been working hard this term developing skills with vector graphics.  They use Adobe Illustrator and combine some self directed study with open ended project work to towards developing a logo for a food or drink concept.  Below is a selection of the outcomes from across the year.  Well done all the people whose work is featured here!!

Mr Roper’s Designer of the Week

This week my designer of the week is Wing. Wing’s communication threw drawing and sketching is usually strong but more importantly she has a really strong sense of what she is looking for in her designs. She has worked through the mechanics of her design proposal and started manufacture. Her lamp promises to be an interesting piece of modern design.

Magic of Animation Course Week 10

This week saw the presentation of students second animation exercise.  They have worked in new groups and in a variety of media once more.  This time round there was more focus on the nature of character through action as well as the use of sound.  Here are some of the results as a youtube playlist.

Designer of the week

My designer of the week this week is Isabella. Isabella really has a keen interest and aptitude for design and enjoys the creative challenge of D&T. Here she is working on a model for her light. She has come up with a number of really exciting ideas and is now trying to work through the tricky process of working out how to bring her ideas to life!!

Magic of Animation experiments with Media

Last week the students planned animations after choosing different media to work in. This week they started to shoot thief films. This part of the course is about discovering problems with different approaches and the possibilities different media provide. The knowledge that is built up as a result of these exercises will help them when moving to more self devised projects.

Year 9 Entrance – Experimenting With Creativity in the Design Process

The term the Technology Faculty is putting a spot light on Creativity and really trying to address how we not only provide creative opportunities to students but also teach them explicitly how they can be more creative. One creative strategy that can be employed is called, “Change the Process”. Linked to this is another technique called, “Look at the tools”. The purpose of these provocations is to get us to consider what we habitually do when faced with design problems and the tools we tend to use to solve them. These year 9 experimented with a technique called scaffiti to develop random organic forms and then selected sone of these forms to cut out of paper. Through folding and cutting the students could further explore and develop forms related to their lighting project.

They have also tried to develop from this exercise and from research through their pintrest accounts some sketch work. Again we tried to make small changes by using coloured paper and pencil rather than plain white. This not only presented ideas more interestingly visually but also prevents rubbing out!
