Year 12 IB DP DT visit to Innovation First

On Friday 15 April the Year 12  Design Technology class visited Innovation First in TST East. The purpose of the visit was to set the context for the next design project which involves the design and construction of a new model using the VEX IQ Robotics Kit. Andy Lee, President of Innovation First International (HK) gave an excellent presentation on the importance of innovation when designing new products and taking them to market. The students then had an opportunity to test some of the exciting products from the Innovation First  range including  Hex Bug, Vex IQ and VEX EDR.

Mr R’s Designer of he Week

I was amazed by 8R’s creative work in he last lesson and will get round to publishing a list of some of the work they completed for their clock project. However, one student really shone and that was Rochelle. Here is just some of he ideas she came up with in the lesson. What amazes me apart from the diversity of her ideas is the maturity of thinking and communication. Well done Rochelle!!

Yr10 engineers end up adrift!

The y10 engineers challenge to build amphibious vehicles resulted in a few sole survivors.

Despite a lot of work going into their designs, unfortunately none of the vehicles got up the ramp to get into the aqueous section of the course. One team however did manage to paddle their way across the water tank to victory.

Check out their designs below:

Mr R’s Designer of the Week

It has been a while since I have identified someone who I wanted to celebrate as my designer of the week so it good to have the opportunity now. This week I would like to celebrate Wenxi. We have been working on the creative process in the design of our clocks. Wenxi has come up with a really nice idea and modelled it extremely well in preparation for he lesson where we start to take this into Adobe Illistrator for development.   I look forward to seeing the result.

Y10 Engineers experiment with amphibious vehicle design…

The Yr10 GCSE engineering group have been challenged to design and build model amphibious vehicles that can navigate their way up a ramp, swim through a channel of water and climb out at the other end.  This requires creative thinking, problem solving and application of their mechanisms knowledge.

Year 8 Creativity Techniques

For their clock designs year 8’s have been using a number of ideas generating strategies to generate more abstract and unusual shape ideas. Scrafitti and jackstaws modelling are two shown here. The range and diversity of ideas created by this group in a little under a hour was impressive.

Mr Roper’s 1st Rotation Year 8 Clocks

Well done to my cohort of Year 8N who completed their clocks over the last 2 weeks.  They worked hard to apply the creativity strategies we looked at in this unit.   All of the class managed to complete their practical and get through the portfolio work associated with this unit well.  Congratulations and happy christmas!!
