Year 10 IGCSE class takes a trip to Pop Vegan, the newest restaurant in town
On Tuesday, the Year 10 IGCSE class took a trip to Pop Vegan, a new restaurant that recently opened on Elgin street in central. The class has been learning about meat and meat alternatives. On the trip, students enjoyed a three-course vegan lunch made completely without meat. On the menu was Vegan Tuna Tartare for a starter, Spaghetti Bolognaise for main course and a delicious Strawberry Cheese Cake for dessert.
After lunch, Miss Joanne Chow (General manager) and Miss Kaylie Mak (Marketing Executive) gave a talk about the vegan way of eating and why their restaurant advocates for this. Miss Mak explained to the students how the restaurant takes usual dishes to makes vegan alternatives, which are more environmentally friendly. She gave an example of the tuna tartare, which they make from konjac but still tastes and looks like real fish.
This was a great experience for the students.
Pop vegan are happy to welcome any members of the Island school community and gave us the QR codes below which provides more information.
Y11 Engineers complete their manufacturing
This year’s Y11 Engineers have completed their practical work and have produced creative, solutions based outcomes that are of a very high quality. It has been a long and challenging process, but the results are fantastic. Well done everyone!
Y11 Engineering Product realisation
Y11 Engineering students have been developing the first working prototypes of their Y11 coursework project having spent 5 months in the design process. From Arduino programming to 3D printing, the students have mastered a range of modern engineering skills to finally realise the engineering solution to their real world problem.
Thai green Curry with Chef Ris
Today we had a visiting Chef teach students how to make authentic Thai green curry. Students were shown how to make the curry paste from the scratch and them use the paste to make their individual curries using their favourite meat. At the end of the session Chef Ris, with the help of Mr Clarke test/tasted all the curries to find out who had made the most authentic dish. This proved to be a tall order, because everyone had done their best to follow the process, despite the length. In the end, it was unanimously decided that for this week, everyone was a winner.
Y10 GCSE Food Students cater for the 1st ever Sports awards
Mrs Chisulo’s Y10 GCSE Food class today excelled themselves in the large scale production challenge that they had been set. They were asked to work in pairs to make 2 different finger food buffet items and eighty of each. The food they produced was of the highest standard, both in terms of appearance and flavours and they collaborated amazingly in their pairs and then as a larger group at the end when they helped each other to finish off and clean up. Yasmine in 10F said “I am very proud of my partner and I, as we have never produced so much food in such a short space of time. We really enjoyed the experience.”. Mr martin (Sports director) was really happy with everything that was produced for guests of the 1st ever sports awards.
There are certainly some chefs in the making in this group of students!
Y11 GCSE Food – Presentation Challange

They were give a range a sauces, fruits and garnishes and at the end of the lesson Mr Lord, Doris the Food Technician and Jess White form the Y13 Hospitality class, all chose their favourites. Well done to Momoka, Krishna and Natasha, who were nicked for their professional presentation.
Y11 Engineers modelling day
Ball launchers, kid’s carousels and skateboard brakes were but a few of the exciting projects being modelled today by Y11 engineers.
Making use of cardboard, Vexx robotics kits and electronics, students were able to come up with feasible prototypes for their GCSE projects, which will aid them in producing their final outcome. Check out some of the models from the day!
Y10 Engineers catapult challenge!
“Year 10 Engineers were tasked with creatively applying the concept of levers to design and build a device that can throw a ping pong ball the furthest. Congratulations to Eugene and Raphael who threw theirs an impressive 9.03 metres!”
