ESF Chef 2020 – Seniors 1st round

This years ESF chef competition got of to an amazing start with senior competitors in y12 producing some superb dishes from the mystery box challenge. The competitors were all give, chicken breast onion, garlic and potato , then had a choice a limited other vegetables and sgtire cupboard ingredients, then had one hour to create a dish.
From the 12 competitors the 7 going the next round are
Winner – Yash Anand(W)
2nd – Rachel Zhou(N)
3rd – Natalie Yee (N)
J4th – Jamie Wong(R)/Valerie Cheng(F)
J6th – Osbourne Ma(D)/Alessandro Lucchini(W)
 
Well done to Yash, whose Chicken kebab with spice mash potato was the stand out dish
We are all looking forward to the next round on Friday 6th March

IB Food Science IA day

Well done to the Y12 IB Food Science students who spend the doping investigations in different food and conducting sensory analysis on products. They were looking at different milks and and made rice pudding, Different oils when making mayonnaise, sugar on making cakes and different meats and plant based meats in meatballs. The found the experience really interesting and enjoyable to run and liked the fact they had to get their friends to do the sensory testing

IB food students visit bread elemnets Bakery

Many thanks to Gregoire at Bread Elements for the amazing tour of the factory and the amazing pastries. The IB food Science students loved learning about the science of bread and croissant making and how this is doen on a large scale using commercial machinery

Magic Seasons Organic students talk

A massive thank you to Alvin Kwong  (Class 2007 alumni, Fleming)  from Magic Season organic, who came in to give a talk to the Y12 IB Food Science students.

The students were really engaged during the question and anweer session, which focused on, what is organic farming and hwo this can be diferent in different countries, the logistics of running such a company, the issue of food wate in HK and how we might combat it, sustainable packing and lots more.

Hope fully Alvin we will back in school soon,m as we are keen to link up on some future projects

Visiting Dietitian talks to the new IB Food Science students

Many thanks to Denise Fair (IS parent), who very kindly came in today to talk to the  Y12 students studying the new IB Food Science course.  Denise has been a qualified Dietitian for 15 years and has been working in Hong Kong for 10 years. She gave a really informative and interesting question and answer sessions with the students on teenage dietary requirements and current diet related issues and trends. this will be very help to students, as they have just formed the IS healthy Food Group as a CAS project and will be doing lots of work around school linked to making good food choices throughout the year. Hope Denise will be coming back at some point later in the year to give talks to parents and other students, so keep you eyes pealed for more details
