Technology Faculty is Awarded the Design Mark
Great news!! The Technology Faculty was awarded the Design Mark after 2 years of hard work. The Design Mark is a quality standards framework developed jointly by the DCSF, The Design Council and the Design & Technology Association. It is intended as an aspirational badge awarded to primary and secondary schools that demonstrate excellence in their teaching of design.
The process involves the faculty looking at all the work they do and evaluating it against the evidence criteria for the Design Mark. The portfolio of evidence built up over the two years is significant and will soon be available on the Design Mark site. Congratulations to the staff and students of technology who have helped to create this significant achievement!!
Photoshop Album Art Work from Year 8
A part of their Digital Literacy course in Year 8 students explore Photoshop and in particular are asked to create a piece of album art in the style of a particular music genre such as punk, rock, reggae, classical, RnB, disco etc. Students research the genre and try to draw out the codes and conventions of the graphics that align with that genre. Part of the creative brief is that they have to include an image of themselves in the design somewhere but it is up to them to what extent they appear. Here are just some of the results from this year’s work which have been picked because of their attention to detail, reflection of the intended genre and imaginative use of the designers own image..
Students make food from their own Culture 1
Over the course of this semester, we have looked at food from different countries and regions of the world. However, for the final few weeks, students have been asked to prepare a dish which represents their culture. Each individual dish will then be featured in the food lovers guide to culture recipe book. The recipe book will be published during the summer holidays and will be available to buy after the break. Today, half the class made their individual dishes and had professional photographs taken for the recipe book by Samantha Fong.
Lords Kitchen – Y13 Graduation Canapes
On 29th may the Y13 graduation ceremony took place and the PTA asked the Lord’s Kitchen class to prepare the nibbles to be served alongside the drinks after the ceremony. The Y10 pupils designed the canapes themselves, whilst the Y11’s were on exam. We carefully considered them so there was a range of ingredients, flavours, textures and suitability of all different dietary requirements We ended up the following menu.

Chicken Pesto Brushetta

Chilli Sesame Prawn Puffs
Crispy Potato Slices with Sour Cream and Caramelized Onion
Hummus and Mushroom bites
Smoked Salmon Bilini’

The event was a roaring success and the feedback was fantastic. Well done to all involved.
Mr Roper’s Designer of the Week
This week my designer of the week is Justin. He completed his lamp which he has worked hard to finish to a high standard over the last few weeks. The concept with the lamp is what is really interesting. Instead of just being a simple lamp the fact that the top part is changeable allows for kits to be made that could effectively change the lamp design and allow it to be flat packed easier. This is great design thinking. Well done Justin!!
