FLG students worked on producing a variety of famous Indian dishes today. Buffet tables were set up outside the food technology rooms. The food was then sold to staff at only$25 a plate. The excitement was enormous as staff queued up to get their portions of this bargain lunch. Queues started early as staff waited patiently outside. This meant pressure on the young cooks. But to everyone’s delight, the food finally arrived and there was plenty to go around. Well done team!
Brickhouse meets Lord’s Kitchen Taco sale
Today was the final lesson for Lord’s kitchen, before the Y11’s left for exam leave and we finished in style, teaming up with BrickHouse restaurant to do a charity taco sale. The pupils cooked all the tacos and assembled them all in a production line with a team of runners and servers making it well oiled machine. We sold over 120 sets of chicken pork taco’s for $50 each and raised $2500 for the Masarang charity. It was a great experience for the pupils and gave them a real insight into the pace in a kitchen during service and need to produce consistent quality products. All the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience and to top it off they each given $1000 meal voucher for their hard work. Many thanks to everyone at BrickHouse and Maximal Concepts for providing this experience that really aided their learning.
Star Baker – Katherine Nye
Congratulations to Katherine who has been out sourcing her talents and as part on her BTEC extended project on cake making has paid to make this fabulous cake for a dog’s birthday. The cake had yo be low fat and low sugar, so it could be enjoyed by both humans and dogs, with caused a few problems, but after researching hard Katherine found great cake and icing recipes and pulled off a great design.
Island School Masterchef Final
On Friday night the Masterchef finals took place at the Spring Cultural fare, with the 4 senior competitors reaching the final and 4 pairs in the Junior section.
The Seniors had an hour and a half to put their “Taste of Asia” on plate and the Juniors had one hour 12 mins to produce their “Taste of Italy”.
The standard of food produced very high and most competitors were extremely well organised, which gave the judges a really hard job. The judges were Simon Hill the manager from HK Culinary Academy and last years star graduate Geraldine and Mr Binge (headteacher) and his wife and they were not only looking at the finished dishes, but also the creativity and working practices.
After much deliberation the results were announced and it was very close between thetop two in both categories, but there can only be one winner .
In the Junior section this was Avantika Malhotra and Chiara Dadamo from 9W, for their Italian Flag on a plate, made up of Two types of homemade pasta, with pesto and ragu, risotto ball, bruchetta and ricotta and coconut dessert.
Really well done also to Ottavia De Rosa and Lucy Acheson, who came clse in 2nd place
Winning the senior was Kaela- Mei Townson (10W), who made an appetiser of Asain Seafood, which stunned teh judges in terms of presentation and flavour.
Specail mention to Katherine Nye who came close in 2nd place with her classic Thai dishes
Well done to all the other competitors, you food was very good though and i hope you enter next year.
Traditional Roast Dinner
Today in our Elements class, students were given the challenge to make a traditional roast dinner. As usual, they worked in groups to come up with the different dishes that make up the dinner. Although this was meant to be a traditional roast dinner, many students came up with their own variations and interpretations of the different components. It was pleasing to see the different influences from different cultures and cuisines that students are familiar with being brought into this task. The winning teams were as follows:

Nothing is impastable wins Tech Day
Healthy pots of pasta, original costumes and a catchy logo won Nansen 2 the top prize in the second Tech Day competition, 24th March 2015.
Tech Day is a challenge event were teams of Year 8 students are given a brief to produce a cooked product, promotional material, uniforms, and branding. The teams appoint a project manager and promotional staff. The project manager then divides the team into groups who go to different tech rooms to cook dishes, make display stands and stitch uniforms. The teams use social media to communicate during the day to talk about their ideas and share their progress.
Once all the products are ready the teams display their work and then judge each other with help from their teachers.
Head of ICT & Technology Mark Roper: “The amount the students learn in a day is wonderful. At the end of the day I ask them to tell me what went well, and what did they learn and it is great to see their skills develop and team work.”
