Y13 BTEC Business – Apprentice Baking challenge
As part of the Y13 BTEC Business studies course, the students were split into 3 teams and each team was gioven $300 to spend on ingredients and materials and were given a stall at the winter fare. They were then asked to go away and plan there stall and were given a 3 hours slot in the food room, to make their products.
The 3 teams were
The Baking Boys and decided to make Triple Chocolate Brownies with fudge sauce.
Gumdrop buttons making Cupcakes
Puff flex making sweet and savory pasties.
The baking was on the whole a great success, with only Puff flex encountering any problems, as some of the sweet white chocolate pasties had quite a bit of leakage and therefore could not be sold. Gumdrop buttons, worked excellently together and produced high volume of consist cupcakes, very good collaboration. The Baking Boys produced a high quality luxury product which they then cleverly packaged.
At the winter fare The Baking boys sold out first with there 35 portions of brownies being very popular,The Cupcakes being sold for $10 each sold at steady pace and eventually sold out, but the pasties, didn’t quite sell out and they had a bit of waste from the exploded chocolate pasties.
All profits were going the Masarang Foundationon and after they had repaid their $300, paid their stall rent the final totals were
The Baking Boys – $700
Gumdrop buttons making Cupcakes – $646
Puff flex making sweet and savory pasties $134
This makes The Baking boys the winning team in terms of profit, but Gumdrop Buttins, won the teamwork award.
Chef of the Week – Mrs Irwin
This week’s Chef of the week is not a student, as I felt Mrs Irwin, the Food technology Educational Assistant, deserved the recognition, as she spent her spare time working on molding and modelling an orangutan out of icing, to be displayed on the Masarang stall at the Winter Fare. It will be auctioned off for the charity at the end of the fare.
I am sure you will agree it is work of art. Thank you for all the hard work, time and effort you put into making it.
3D Product Design – Entrepreneur Challenge!
Identifying the Problem
Having developed many practical skills from the past few months projects, the elements product designers have begun their “Entrepreneur Challenge”.
Design Brief: “New products are coming on the market everyday, but aren’t always successful. You are to come up with a new product that will fill a gap in the market, and be able to generate profit.”
With a Dragon’s Den/Shark Tank-esque panel to pitch to at the end of the semester, the groups have identified their problems and are working through the design process to come up with a viable solution to their identified problem.
Some of the problems getting solved/products being developed are:
“Mac charger cables breaking at the bend”
“Locker tidy”

Lord’s Kitchen/Blue – Charity Butcher Burger Sale (week 10)
In this week’s lesson Blue butchers chefs came into school to help sell purgers for the Masarang Charity. Pupils had been trained how to prepare the fillings and cook the burgers last week, so his week it was all about team work and mass production. One all the salad prep was done and the burger buns were toasted, the class was split into two, a team for the playground and team in the classroom. The classroom team had a to cook 2/3’s of the buns and had a really good production line going on, whilst the playground team was cooking the rest on the outdoor grill and selling all the burgers.
It was a very hectic hour of selling, where 172 burgers were sold, raising $6500 for the the charity and even though there wwere a couple of foreseen hiccups, everyone really pulled together to ensure this was a major success and gave pupils a really valuable experience into the catering industry.
Pupils were then really happy to recieve a gift bag from the Blue butcher (Maximal Concepts), with a T-shirt, certificate and meal voucher- So once again thank-you very much to the whole team involved.
