We believe

The purpose of design education at Island School is to empower students with the thinking skills to process and solve problems, both within the context of the experiences through which it is taught but also in the wider context of their lives.  We believe that design education should be experiential and that at the heart of good design thinking lies the ability to identify and creatively describe problems with insight and empathy.  We want to create student designers who have the critical capacity to innovate optimal solutions and who can communicate the results of their research, analysis and creativity in a way that embodies meaning.

We value

In technology we…

Pursue Excellence by...
  • never being satisfied with the first answer or idea
  • taking risks in order to extend skills, understanding and creativity
  • selecting technology appropriately to realise creative thinking
  • understanding that the best ideas come from objective evaluation and continuous improvement
Celebrate Individuality by...
  • always being open to new possibilities and the ideas of others
  • striving for ideas that are original, distinctive and different
  • being a creator not a copier
  • understanding that creativity is not about right or wrong
Embrace Responsibility by...
  • believing that things should be made better, more sustainably
  • understanding that true design serves the needs of others
  • being an active participant in lessons, learning and  problem solving
  • understanding how technology affects us and the world around us both positively and negatively
Design is not just what it looks and feels like.  Design is how it works.
Steve Jobs
Providing, meaning to a mass of unrelated needs, ideas, words and pictures – it is the designer’s job to select and fit this material together and make it interesting.
Paul Rand
Good design is all about making other designers feel like idiots because that idea wasn’t theirs.
Frank Chimero
