First day for elements animators

First animation lesson and we got to grips with some of the fundamental questions around what we doing in his course. What do we expect? Why did we choose it? What is frame rate and the persistence of vision  and what is there relevance to animation?  Is animation just making things look like they are moving?  We’ve then go on to make our zoetropes and our first very simple animations. The point of this is to try to understand some of the complexities and limitations of frame by frame animation as well as the workload implications of our story decisions.

Over the next few weeks they will experience a range of media that will form the basis for their own animation work later. Today they explored ink on paper – a very free and expressive approach to animation.  For now here are a few photos. A compilation of he students short animations will follow.

Magic of Animation Final Production Week

This was the final week for students to generate film ready for sound and editing for their final animations. There is a tremendous amount of creative decision making at this point and it becomes more clear about of the importance of planning. The students are all animating a message with clear audience and purpose. Some of the creative ideas that surround these messages are fabulous. Now they need to deliver!!

Magic of Animation Course Week 10

This week saw the presentation of students second animation exercise.  They have worked in new groups and in a variety of media once more.  This time round there was more focus on the nature of character through action as well as the use of sound.  Here are some of the results as a youtube playlist.

Magic of Animation experiments with Media

Last week the students planned animations after choosing different media to work in. This week they started to shoot thief films. This part of the course is about discovering problems with different approaches and the possibilities different media provide. The knowledge that is built up as a result of these exercises will help them when moving to more self devised projects.
