A modelling career in engineering…

Y10 engineers have kicked off their first practical challenge of the year by modelling their catapult designs in paper straws before moving on to building wood scale models.

The winning design will be the one that launches a ping pong ball the furthest.

Y10 Engineers experiment with amphibious vehicle design…

The Yr10 GCSE engineering group have been challenged to design and build model amphibious vehicles that can navigate their way up a ramp, swim through a channel of water and climb out at the other end.  This requires creative thinking, problem solving and application of their mechanisms knowledge.

Visit to Nood Food’s Pure Kitchen

Today the Y11, 12 and 13 Food Technology students visited the PURE kitchen, where all the Nood food products are made. We had a great tour of the commercial kitchen and a real insight into all the hygiene and safety procedures that need to be in place whilst making the salads, sandwiches, drinks and raw food snacks. They also kindly gave us all a bottle of their coconut water and the raw chocolate bar.
Thanks to everyone at Nood food

Bridging the gap

The Yr10 engineers are discovering the key to successful bridge design through a  practical miniature bridge building project.

The winning design so far has been produced by Jennifer Frawley and Hasnain Altaf. The bridge is currently supporting a very impressive 16kg of load without breaking!

Ranen – featured student designer

I wanted to post this picture to celebrate Ranen’s work. We have been trying in year 8 to develop creative approaches to design and Ranen really responded with his clock numbers. I love the interlinked typography he has come up with. Additionally a happy accident with the laser cutter meant that he had to cut one part twice. He plans to use this unexpected extra piece to cheat a bit more 3 dimensionality to his outcome. Good stuff!

Mr Roper’s Designer of the Week

A belated congratulations to Matheus in 9N who was my designer of the week last week. Unfortunatelyi only get round to posting this today.

What I really liked a it Matheus’ work was the way he listened and interpreted the guidance he was given to develop his idea. He created a very modern high tech look which will come out well in the materials we are using. Well done!!!!

GCSE Engineers catapult their way to victory!

Y10 Engineers were tasked with designing and building catapults to throw a table tennis ball the furthest. Some great designs from Mr Parker’s class, but Mr York’s class trumped the competition by a long shot, with Jay Han’s design throwing an impressive 8.6 metres!

Catapult testing

Year 10 IGCSE students test their catapults

Year 9 finished lighting

Well it’s taken a while but the lighting project is starting to reach its end with some final products being realised. These students have all worked hard to achieve high quality outcomes. What has been really encouraging is the commitment to quality right to the end which demonstrates growing maturity as designers. These lights are by Douglas, Aayush, Wing and Krishna.

Illuminating designs…

Here are just a few of the great lamp designs that are being produced by year 9 DT students.

The lamps were to be designed flat-pack, and assembled by the end user, adding an extra challenge to the project. Students developed skills in creative design, CAD/CAM and electronics.

Featured designers this week are Tiffany Chong, Christophe Hatterer, Ryan Krishnamohan and Megan Lam.
