Year 10 IGCSE class takes a trip to Pop Vegan, the newest restaurant in town

On Tuesday, the Year 10 IGCSE class took a trip to Pop Vegan, a new restaurant that recently opened on Elgin street in central. The class has been learning about meat and meat alternatives. On the trip, students enjoyed a three-course vegan lunch made completely without meat. On the menu was Vegan Tuna Tartare for a starter, Spaghetti Bolognaise for main course and a delicious Strawberry Cheese Cake for dessert.

After lunch, Miss Joanne Chow (General manager) and Miss Kaylie Mak (Marketing Executive) gave a talk about the vegan way of eating and why their restaurant advocates for this. Miss Mak explained to the students how the restaurant takes usual dishes to makes vegan alternatives, which are more environmentally friendly. She gave an example of the tuna tartare, which they make from konjac but still tastes and looks like real fish.

This was a great experience for the students.

Pop vegan are happy to welcome any members of the Island school community and gave us the QR codes below which provides more information.

Y10 GCSE Food Students cater for the 1st ever Sports awards

Mrs Chisulo’s Y10 GCSE Food class today excelled themselves in the large scale production challenge that they had been set. They were asked to work in pairs to make 2 different finger food buffet items and eighty of each. The food they produced was of the highest standard, both in terms of appearance and flavours and they collaborated amazingly in their pairs and then as a larger group at the end when they helped each other to finish off and clean up. Yasmine in 10F said “I am very proud of my partner and I, as we have never produced so much food in such a short space of time. We really enjoyed the experience.”. Mr martin (Sports director) was really happy with everything that was produced for guests of the 1st ever sports awards.

There are certainly some chefs in the making in this group of students!

Visit to Nood Food’s Pure Kitchen

Today the Y11, 12 and 13 Food Technology students visited the PURE kitchen, where all the Nood food products are made. We had a great tour of the commercial kitchen and a real insight into all the hygiene and safety procedures that need to be in place whilst making the salads, sandwiches, drinks and raw food snacks. They also kindly gave us all a bottle of their coconut water and the raw chocolate bar.
Thanks to everyone at Nood food

HE Fare Catering

Big thank-you and well done to the Y10 GCSE Food Tech students and Y12 IB Food students who prepared all the food for the presenters after the Higher education Fare.

The Y10 students were in charge of sandwiches and they initially all designed their own, using different types of bread filling and we decided on the best 5. We then turned this into a production line activity to show how to mass produce. There were 5 groups and each group had to make 80 sandwiches. One group even made their own dough and flat breads.
