Cooking with Worms

For this years Y8 tech days we decided to see how squeamish the students were and cook with works as an alternative protein souce.  Livinfarms https://www.livinfarms.com/the-hive-en a Hong kong start up company supplied teh worms and the studenst really embraced the idea that ion the future we may all be eating insects to get enough protein to feed a growing population, and ver a billion people on the planet eat them regularly

This was part of a technology project with students design uniform, window displays, app and graphic designs for a restaurants concept, with students working in groups of 16. The winning teams made Japanese Mealworm fried rice and Rice burger with Meal work and chickpea patties. The other really tasty product was Meal worm banan bread and i will be sending all these recipes to LivinFarms.

The students excelled themselves and had no issues in trying the worms and it was really successful couple of days that demonstrated creativity, communication and collaboration

Dress Fruit Friday fro Healthy Eating Week

Many thanks to all the students and staff who dressed fruity or colourful and vibrant for Healthy Eating Week and donated towards teh World Food Program School Feeding Program https://www1.wfp.org/school-feeding.

We raised a total of $3162.60

The students were also rewarded with free fruit as they came into school

Fleming win the Y7/8 STEM week food challenge

Well done to the students from Fleming, who won the STEM week food challenge making flaring islands. Each house had two y7 and two y8 students and they had to collaborate to make Creme anglaise and steamed meringue to show the  aeration snd coagulation of eggs.

8F Pizza Buisiness challenge winners

Well done to the students in 8F (Johnson, Renee Lo, Renee Leung, Kit Kit, Denise and Lachian) who were the first winners in the Food Life Skills Pizza Business Project. the students collaborated to come up with a new concept for a pizza business. they each had different job roles tr design and produce their pizza business, including manager, chef, marketing, branding, nutritionist and finance and they came up with a Business called Pizzzazzz, with a brilliant Eater themed pizza. A special mention has to go to Renee Leung who showed amazing talent and understand of the design process in designing the logo and mascot Bob the flying Pig.

Food Life skills – Y8 food film project

In Lower school, the Food Tech departemntr has taken a interdisciplinary approach to the teaching and has developed a new life skills couse, that links with different curoculum areas. This first projrect looked a food s\yling and how to make cooking videos, with Ms Word coming in to teach the basics of starting to make a food film.

Y8 Wilberforce cereal bar winners.

It was the year 8 Wilberforce tutor groups turn to take part in the Life Skills cereal bar/bite challenge this week, where students worked in small groups to design and make their own healthy cereal snack product. The winners were lex and Hei Ching, who made cereal bites which they named HEX Balls. Mr Wilkinson and MR Pawlyn were the judges and decided that the HEX ba;l;s had the perfect texture and were were deliciouis without being too sweet.

they will now make this with all of the other tutor groups winning products on Wed 13th June, during Healthy Eating Week.

*R Cereal Bar winners – Anakin, Wo Hang and Aaron

Well done to Anakin, Wo Hang and Aaron from 8R who won the form competition for their cereal bar in life skills/healthy eating this week. Their product was voted the most popular by the rest of their form group. Many thanks to Ms Newby, who conducted the sensory analysis with the group whilst Mr Lord was in Thailand on the BTEC Hospitality trip

 

8N Cereal Bar winners – Ethan and Will

Well done to Ethan and Will, who were voted as the Nansen winners of the cereal bar challenge the Healthy eating Life skills lesson. All of 8N tried each of the different groups cereal bar products and rated them on texture and taste. There Krispy-crunch bar was just the right level of sweetness, whilst being firm, but crunchy. Thye will go up against all the the other form winners in the end of year final.

Well done to Sam, Tia and Olivia who created their Banana Na Na Bites o winner for Fleming in the Healthy eating community time challenge and will go through to the final against all the other form winners.
